Getting from Madrid to Valencia

Valencia is the fourth largest city in Spain. It’s a charming old town, located on the Mediterranean coast. The city is famous for being the birth place of “paella”. Plan your vacation in Valencia either during spring or during fall, as summers are extremely hot and humid.
Many visitors prefer to combine a vacation in Madrid with visiting the coastal cities like Valencia or Malaga.
If you like to travel on the spur of the moment, then the best option is to take the bus (€23.82 per person, one way) or the slow train (€23.50 per person, one way). If you manage to plan your vacation 8-9 weeks in advance, and need tickets for a RT then you can choose the plane.

By plane

Valencia is served by Valencia Airport (airport code: VLC), which is located at 9 km from the city center. There are buses connecting the airport to the city center.
The flight time between Madrid and Valencia is 1 hour. The following companies offer non-stop flights: Air Europa and Iberia. Each carrier offers at least 4 flights per day.
If you want a RT ticket and plan 8-9 weeks in advance, the price can be as low as €58 per person on Iberia.

By train

The trains to Valencia depart from both Chamartin and Atocha stations.
The trains called “Alaris” depart from Chamartin and take about 4 hours to get from Madrid to Valencia. A tourist ticket costs €45.20 per person, one way (€45.50 if you buy from the train station). Discounts are available for children.
The following trains depart from Madrid Chamartin station:

at 6:40 a.m., daily except on Sun, from June 14 to Oct 11
at 7:40 a.m., daily, from June 14 to Oct 12
at 8:42 a.m., daily, from June 14 to Oct 12
at 11 a.m., daily, from June 14 to Dec 12
at 3 p.m., daily, from June 14 to Dec 12
at 4:40 p.m., daily, June 14 to Oct 2
at 5:40 p.m., daily, June 26 to Sept 2
at 6:40 p.m., daily, from June 14 to Dec 12

The trains called “Regional” depart from Atocha station and take 6 hours to get from Madrid to Valencia. A tourist ticket costs €23.50 per person, one way (same price in the train station).
The following trains depart from Madrid Atocha station, daily, year round: at 8:50 a.m., 12:23 p.m. and 4 p.m.

By bus

The company called Avanza Bus offer the service between Madrid and Valencia. There are two types of buses: normal and express. Both take 4 hours to get from Madrid to Valencia. The tickets cost €23.82 per person, one way on the normal bus and €33.20 per person, one way on the express bus. Discounts are available for children under 4 and military personnel.
There are 13 departures per day, first being at 1 a.m. and last at 10:30 p.m..

By car

If you like the independence of enjoying a country at your pace, then renting a car in Spain is a great idea. The driving distance between Madrid and Valencia is 358 km and you should be able to get there in about 4 hours.
Take M-23 to Valencia, continue on R-3 and then on A-3. Keep following the signs to Valencia. All roads are either toll roads or partial toll roads.
